ABSTRACT

Argentina is the most perplexing and frustrating country in Latin America. Located in the south temperate zone, Argentina is one of the wealthier countries in Latin America. Moreover, it has been a rich country for some time. Walt W. Rostow estimates that Argentina was the one Latin American country to pass his mythical "take-off" into self-sustained economic growth in the 1920s. By the 1920s, Argentina had almost completed the process of national development, begun in the late nineteenth century, that made it the most modern and economically advanced nation in Latin America. The Argentine economy was tied to a mammoth export sector, centered on beef and wool. Hipólito Yrigoyen was born on July 12, 1852, in Buenos Aires. His father, Martin Yrigoyen Dodagaray, was a Basque immigrant, although none of the biographers seems to know when Martin emigrated to Argentina. Martin was, in the nature of the Basques, a hard worker.
