ABSTRACT
Although exercises give us some idea of NATO and Warsaw Pact strategies and the forces they would employ in any conflict, these are by no means set in concrete. When one asks admirals or generals for their estimates of the outcome of a conflict, they reply, "It depends on the scenario." Thus, before discussing strategies and forces, it is useful to examine some of the possible scenarios for a conflict in the nordic area.
