ABSTRACT

Six members of the Politburo Standing Committee had been elected at the 1982 Twelfth Party Congress: Hu Yaobang, Ye Jianying, Deng Xiaoping, Zhao Ziyang, Li Xiannian, and Chen Yun. The only Standing Committee members then in Beijing were Hu Yaobang, Deng Xiaoping, Zhao Ziyang, and Chen Yun. When he maintained that "as far back as 1984 the Central Committee knew of Hu Yaobang's errors and considered removing him," Zhao was referring to the letter he wrote to Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yun demanding that they remove Hu Yaobang. However, Zhao Ziyang's two speeches delivered on January 28 and 29 weren't appreciated by anyone but Deng Xiaoping. In these speeches, Zhao gave a new twist to Deng Xiaoping's ideology. In attributing to Deng Xiaoping the merit of the "elaboration" of these two basic points, Zhao Ziyang wanted to flatter him. The Thirteenth Party Congress marked the climax of Deng Xiaoping and Zhao Ziyang's honeymoon.
