ABSTRACT

On December 22, 1944, Howorth led a convoy of twenty-one transport ships from Leyte Gulf to Hollandia, New Guinea. Six days and a depressing Christmas at sea later, Howorth entered Humboldt Bay, where the radar antenna, bent by the kamikaze at Mindoro, was repaired. On January 3 Howorth began a ten-day voyage escorting the second supply group for the January 9 invasion of Luzon at Lingayen Gulf. The convoy came under suicide attack on January 12, one day prior to arriving at Lingayen.
