ABSTRACT

By 1835 Dabo had clearly established his predominance; but his incessant campaigning was then past. Having established supremacy, Dabo proceeded to consolidate it by associating the senior Fulani leaders with his government, while reviving the old state council in a modified form. In the north Dabo had earlier defended and extended the Dambazawa interests against Dan Tunku. In the east Abdullahi’s forces preserved the jurisdictions of those Fulani who administered Jahun, Dutse, Gaya, Ringim and elsewhere. Dabo had established Barbura as a fortified town (ribat) on the Kano panhandle that separates Daura in the west from Gumel, an affiliate of Bomu. He had settled Barbura with Hausa and Fulani immigrants from Damagaram (Zinder) and appointed their leader as chief. Tukur having already withdrawn with the Kano army, while the rebel Ahmadu controlled Kila, the Fulani chief of Jahun, Modibo, decided to act without awaiting the emir’s orders, to stamp out Ahmadu’s rebellion and restore Kila to Kano.
