ABSTRACT

The momentum of population growth in the first half of the century was sustained by internal and international migration. Since a demographic analysis of the city's population depends for the most part on the 1264/1848 census, it is necessary to review the procedures and categories used by the census takers, insofar as these can be ascertained. The effects of Muhammad Ali's policies became manifest in the 1830s and 1840s, the first real boom period in the city's modern history. The data point to several important features of the general demographic structure. The census records also contain information on the status of property ownership, and data from the records indicate that among holders of substantial urban property in al-Manshiya in 1848, Muslim landlords were in the majority. The long-term basis of the expansion was the commercialization of Egyptian agriculture, in which Alexandria functioned as an export center.
