ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the analysis of the physical growth and nutritional status of children of El Progreso. The growth differences between males and females are again similar to those reported in numerous other studies. In general, males are larger than are females in measures of body size and lean body mass (UAMC). In terms of growth, childhood is characterized as a period of regularity. Velocities gradually decrease from the high rates of infancy and become stabilized. The differences between the two clusters are approximately 10 cm or more. In general, males means are greater than those of females, but the sex differences are small for all of the Guatemalan samples. The children and youths who attend this school are drawn from the most affluent families in the country and their environments, as a group, are clearly near the optimum for Guatemala.
