ABSTRACT

This chapter presents our analysis of the effects of environmental variables on growth within the community itself. Our focus is upon the extent to which physical growth is an indicator of socioeconomic status and its components. For the longitudinal analysis, we utilized the data of those children who had been seen at each of the five yearly examinations. All increments were examined for unusually high or low values and, where possible, estimates of the correct values were imputed. If a correction could not be made, the case was dropped from the analysis. This gave us a group of 364 children each of whom had been measured at five consecutive annual visits. The independent variables are in the center. Cohort and sex controlled by this type of analysis, so that the effect of SES may be determined independent of any confounding influence sex and cohort.
