ABSTRACT

The domestic group on Caye Caulker is a household which contains a nuclear family: a man and woman living in a conjugal relationship, their own children and any children from previous conjugal relationships. Women may line fish at times, learn to spot lobster traps, or clean the inside of a boat, but they do not become fishermen. Men and women have clear and separate duties in relation to their families. Men are expected to provide financially for their conjugal partner and any children they produce. The socialization of children is primarily the woman's responsibility. In the home, mothers teach children their responsibilities and supervise their behavior. On Caye Caulker, domestic groups contain both men and women and eventually children. Each person has a set of clearly defined responsibilities and jobs appropriate to his or her gender and age.
