ABSTRACT

On Caye Caulker, individuals value personal independence and self-sufficiency, and they respect the qualities in others. Consequently there is a congruence between, on the one hand, the goals of self-sufficiency, independence, and non-interference and, on the other hand, the ideals of family loyalty and the economic and social importance of being part of a family support network. Regardless of family affiliation, or place of origin, islanders believe that individuals, not the family or community, are responsible for their own actions. Socializing or 'flapping around' is a favorite activity of people on Caye Caulker. Socializing breaks up the routine of daily chores and is an important part of some tasks. The co-op is clearly the most successful organization on Caye Caulker. Its success can be attributed to several factors. The success of any social organization on Caye Caulker depends on two key factors: the perceived need for such an organization and whether it is initiated by islanders or outsiders.
