ABSTRACT

Theory is necessary to applied research and applied research contributes to the body of theory. Plant breeders and biogeneticists must understand the theory of genetics before they can hope to efficiently develop strains resistant to certain diseases. The researcher’s foundation in theory provides the orientation for defining a problem that is researchable within the discipline or disciplines involved in the research and with the resources available. Although theory permeates the entire research process, in applied research, frequently conducted under sub-optimum conditions, the researcher’s practical experience is equally important. The processes of evolution, development and use of theory are normal and necessary within human reason. Development of theory is a natural, nearly involuntary human behavioral trait that permits growth of the individual in succeedingly comprehensive strategies for self management and development. Theory plays an important role in research by providing structure and form to “known” relationships as a basis for developing additivity and efficiency in management of the knowledge quest.
