ABSTRACT

The links between Israel and South Africa predate the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Over the years very close personal, communal, normative, and Financial links have developed between South African Jews and Israel. The outbreak of hostilities between Israel and her Arab neighbors in October 1973 had important consequences for Israel's domestic politics and foreign policy in general, and particularly for her relations with both black Africa and South Africa. Economic relations between Israel and South Africa have blossomed through a series of trade agreements, the establishment of joint projects, the formation of joint bodies aimed at promoting trade links, and the appointment of missions. It is the military cooperation between Israel and South Africa that has attracted the most publicity in recent years. Israeli technicians were reportedly helping South Africa to modernize its air force.
