ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses what steps would be necessary to implement the war economy strategy. It shows how such a strategy would contribute to rekindling the nation’s economic growth while productively incorporating millions of Mexicans into the labor force. The Mexican government continues to pursue its new export-led approach to recovery and growth of the economy. To compete in international markets, Mexico must produce different nontraditional goods and lower their prices by reducing the cost of labor to foreigners. The chapter shows that the war economy strategy is intended as a contribution to the search for new approaches to reinitiate economic growth in Mexico. The Mexican war economy strategy would stimulate broad-based economic growth and put that growth on a sounder footing. The proposed strategy is similar to the war economy strategy that reorganized the British and US economies during World War II.
