ABSTRACT

The existence of boundaries, which are in some ways analogous to those reported by Joseph A. Miller and K. N. Johnson, was found in the case of loggers. Despite the bonds and symbols that link all types of loggers, there are important categories or subgroups. The term “gyppo” has remained a important term in the logger’s world, although the fieldwork uncovered no evidence that the term is used perjoratively as Stewart Holbrook states it was in the first world war era. Gyppos see themselves as the direct heirs of the old-time loggers who settled the West and conquered the big timber through rugged endurance. In the case of gyppo operations, fallers subcontract with the logging contractor to fall, buck and limb the timber for a specified price per thousand board feet. The faller is responsible for furnishing his own pickup truck, saws, gasoline, oil and other related equipment.
