During the 1972-1982 period, private lending through international financial channels became the largest source of external capital for developing countries, far exceeding the volume of official development assistance or private direct investment. This flow, averaging $60 billion annually between 1979 and 1981, occurred largely in the form of commercial bank lending but also included about $2 billion of suppliers’ credits and $1 billion of international bond issues.
