ABSTRACT

A field headquarters was formed in Jiangxi with Lu Diping, the provincial governor, as commander-in-chief. Under Lu's headquarters were three army routes, altogether 10 divisions totalling 100,000 men. On December 22, 1930, the General Front Committee issued a manifesto entitled "Eight Favorable Conditions for a Grand Victory." An intense fight took place between them and lasted for four hours with wounds and casualties on both sides. A few days later Zhang fell into the Red Army's ambush ring in Longgan. The Red Army quickly shifted to attack the nearby Tan Daoyuan's 50th Division and won another decisive battle. The Party Center was forced to move to the Soviet, but it also descended to the Soviet and Red Army came to assume leadership. A Communist leader with a worker origin and a reputation in the labor union movement, Xiang could hardly hold his leading position in the Jiangxi Soviet simply by virtue of his tide.
