ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 examines mortality and health in Mexico using data obtained from the 1980 Mexican census and from various anuarios. Mortality data are for 1979 while health data are for 1980. The seven measures of mortality presented include the crude infant mortality rate (that is, the ratio, for one year, of infant deaths to 1,000 live births), the total annual mortality rate (that is, deaths per 1,000 population), and a standardized annual mortality which in essence controls for varying age structures among the states. Standardized mortality rates also are presented for the four major causes of death in Mexico: (1) cardiovascular, (2) respiratory, (3) infectious diseases, and (4) trauma.
