ABSTRACT

The deviations model is the simplest mathematical model from which any inequality measure is derived. This chapter discusses eight different indexes (and five equivalents) based on the deviations model. In all cases, I present an operational definition equation for the measure that expresses the deviations logic directly and clearly. In some instances in which that equation is unduly difficult or time-consuming to calculate, I also present a computational equation, in this and subsequent chapters. This latter equation does not reveal the deviations logic as clearly, but the investigator can use it more easily to measure inequality empirically. I analyze the major parts of each equation and state them in verbal terms. The discussion also refers to the originator's intended purpose of the measure. In addition, I assess each index in terms of the conceptual criteria presented in chapter two.
