Viktor Afanasyev, PRAVDA'S chief editor, also referred to Yeltsin and attacked Yeltsin's speech at the CPSU Central Committee October 1987 Plenum. Afanasyev defended the role of the press and defended himself against accusations of being a "pioneer of stagnation."
