ABSTRACT

The chief editor of the ZNAMYA journal, Grigoriy Baklanov defended glasnost' and demanded a law on the press. Repeatedly interrupted by the obviously hostile audience, Baklanov received some help from Gorbachev, who tried to silence the protests against Baklanov's speech. Baklanov criticized Soviet involvement in Afghanistan and demanded prohibition of such actions in the future.
