ABSTRACT

Several articles and interviews published at the beginning of September, most notably Chebrikov's PRAVDA interview and two PRAVDA articles on the start of World War II and on "antisocialist subversive propaganda" and an article by General Staff Commander-in-Chief Marshal Akhromeyev, reiterated the main elements of Ligachev's Gorkiy speech (see Chapter 8 ). Coming so soon after Yakovlev's rebuff of Ligachev's speech, these articles implied that a serious controversy was under way in the Politburo and that the conservatives were on the offensive. However, it was primarily Chebrikov's interview that prompted reformers' concerns that a major conservative assault on perestroika was developing.
