ABSTRACT

The essence of the plan tor a mixed economy was the idea that workers, peasants, and employers had to cooperate in the reactivation of the economy. Even a moderate mixed economy proved to be untolerable for the US administration, and has led to open hostility and indirect warfare. Maintaining a mixed economy helped in continuing the support of other Western and Latin American countries, and also in preventing a direct US military intervention against Nicaragua. The class rhetoric of the Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN) speeches was likely to frighten parts of the bourgeoisie, causing them to conclude that the mixed economy was only a tactical maneuver and would be set aside in due course. In the footsteps of Sandino, the ideology of the FSLN has a strong nationalistic, anti-imperialistic component. Contradictions appeared in FSLN ideology regarding the desired economic order.
