ABSTRACT

The primary methods of analysis used are descriptive accounts of the cohort members' characteristics, experiences, and outcomes, logistic regression analysis, and ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis. Although there is a different transition pattern in Great Britain than is found in the United States, entry into full-time labor force participation is a meaningful event in the analysis of the life course. A number of measures are included in the analysis that are concerned with the other transitional events marking the change from adolescence to adulthood. There is a conceptual relationship between Ralph Turner's differentiation between sponsored and contest systems of mobility and Aage B. Sorensen's differentiation between open and closed systems of positions that may be relevant to these two expectations. Similarly, the timing of the departure from the parental home and its temporal association with other transition events are included in the analysis.
