ABSTRACT

Certain very crucial dynamics have allowed for the evolvement of the US strategic posture. They constantly strengthen the meaning and the workings of the American style of nuclear strategy. The larger technological revolution which has taken place, together with nuclear weapons, has also had an undoubtedly deep effect on American society. The functionalist approach embedded within a great number of scientific and technical minds carries serious implications for US nuclear strategy. American scientists must keep on designing more and more sophisticated weapons of defense against nuclear threats and the perceived fear of atomic surrender. A technological constituency has implanted in the US strategic community a set of political beliefs about the benefits of pursuing and investing in science as the key to survival. The most important dynamic which stimulates the procurement of nuclear weapons is what happens inside the US government Bureaucratic politics is by now a very well-known approach to foreign and defense policy.
