ABSTRACT

Fisheries policies can have a considerable impact on nutrition. National nutrition agencies may undertake programs such as nutrition education, on-site feeding, take-home feeding, nutrient dense foods, ration shops, food coupons, fortification, direct nutrient dosage, and food processing and distribution activities. Nutrition agencies can provide guidance regarding what kinds of nutrients are needed where, to help assure that the demand for nutrients is more effectively matched to the supply. Fisheries agencies can help to find or develop products which would be useful in specific nutrition-oriented activities. Programs for increasing the use of fisheries products for the alleviation of malnutrition should be formulated through close cooperation between the fisheries and the nutrition agencies of government. Activities designed to enhance the use of fisheries in combating malnutrition might be undertaken through a large scale, well publicized program. National fisheries agencies and nutrition agencies then should establish mechanisms for collaboration.
