ABSTRACT

The second National Front was organized in July 1960 in response to the temporary retreat of dictatorship. The relaxation of repression provided the opportunity for the National Front to resurface. The second National Front had three principal objectives: to restore the basic individual and social rights of the Iranian people guaranteed by the 1906 Constitution, to establish a legal government through free public elections, and to adhere to an independent foreign policy which, although in accord with the United Nations charter, would give priority to Iran's national interests. The leadership of the second National Front was basically in the hands of the first National Front's leaders. Mehdi Bazargan was born to a Bazaari family in 1907. His father was a respected Bazaar merchant and a devout Moslem. Shapoor Bakhtiar was born in Esfahan Province in 1915. His family, one of the most prominent in the Bakhtiary Tribe, carried the honorary title of governor of Esfahan since the seventeenth century.
