ABSTRACT

Plot lands are nonetheless often of very high quality in Pecsely, the majority being scattered on the hillsides where the best land for vines is located, but where mechanized cultivation is not practicable. In addition to the collectively-farmed fields which occupy the greater part of Pecsely's agricultural territory, about 126 hectares remain in individual cultivation. The plot farming system is versatile and flexible. In the context of the present-day Hungarian economic structure that is a distinct advantage. The plots in Pecsely are valuable, because a standard size collective plot vineyard of about 0.3 hectares may net as much as 20 to 30 thousand forints a year. The younger plot farmers, in their thirties and forties, are often skilled workers, who engage in plot farming more out of a calculated choice, having carefully assessed how profits compare with earnings from other sources and having adjusted the plot's production to the market.
