ABSTRACT

The pre-war status groups tend to interact among themselves, thus, at the vintage of one of the former larger landowners of Pecsely, one would find among the helpers the more prestigious of the village residents alongside kinsmen and some other former gazdas. In Pecsely the plot farming sector perpetuates some of the traditional peasant elements within the village; this is the case not only as regards the actual techniques of farming, but also of forms of social interaction. Plot farming requires a fairly extensive network of reciprocal help. It is unlikely that the present level of plot farming and the solving of pressing housing problems could progress without such networks of reciprocal help. Efficiency and success in a small farming plot are matters of pride; they can be seen and judged by all fellow villagers, unlike the achievements of a job outside the village.
