ABSTRACT

Participation by the Militia is minimal and is obviously handicapped by the absence in most regiments of a band; it is affected also by the inability to attend two parades so close together. Though once a major source of Militia support when they housed cadet units, the publicly subsidized schools were certainly not generators of interest during the fieldwork. Most seemed to fall back on the official raison d'être for the Militia as a support for the regular force because it was believed that the latter could not meet its commitments without call outs from the Militia. There was never any mention of the effect on the community, province, or nation. There were several instances in which the higher command did not seem to grasp the importance of fostering a practical relationship between communities and their Militia units, in other words, to regard them as their own.
