ABSTRACT
The Electricity Trust of South Australia has recently developed Leigh Creek South, a fully planned, energy efficient township (population 2,400), with low environmental impact. It is remotely situated in the hot-arid north of South Australia's Outback. Soils are alkaline and may be extremely saline and sodic (1). Potable water is an expensive and limited commodity, supplied by a dam and desalinated groundwater.
