ABSTRACT

A number of policy perspectives exist which have multifaceted impacts on science and technology development planning in the Third World. A systematic assessment of the policy strategies suggested by these perspectives can be highly valuable for further advancing our knowledge about the many problematic aspects of Third World science and technology. The countries of the Third World have their roots in many great civilizations of the past which achieved magnificent developments not only in arts, literature, and philosophy but also in science and technology. Almost all Third World governments and international development agencies have programs on Appropriate Technology, and they prioritize it in Third World development policy strategies One of the lessons that Third World science policymakers can derive from the Appropriate Technology Movement is that their planning and choices of technology should be relevant to the socio-economic goals and values of their respective countries.
