ABSTRACT

Bullying is a pattern of repeated aggressive behaviors directed from one child to another, usually where there is a power difference. Bullying typically involves a larger child or several children who pick on one, rather than the usual aggressive acts of childhood that occur between individuals of relatively equal size, status, or number. The bullying victim has difficulty defending him- or herself. Bullying often occurs in a chronic pattern, over a long time in which a kind of relationship develops between a bully and his victim. The bullying behavior that makes them difficult to relate to among peers often has the same effect on co-workers. The parents of children who exhibit the behavior should be very concerned about bullying. Bullying occurs virtually everywhere. It is not only a characteristic ofWestern cultures, but is a serious problem in Japan, China, and other countries.
