ABSTRACT

The gap in the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) between the Jewish and Arab sectors narrowed between 1949 and 1967, but a considerable gap remained, and remains. The State of Israel developed its GDP at a rate of 10 per cent per annum from 1949 to 1967, despite the recession of 1964-1967, with an investment growth rate of nearly 6 per cent per annum. A part of the large refugee population fleeing areas occupied by Israel went both to the West Bank and to the East Bank. In the wake of the 1948 War and with the occupation by Jordan of the West Bank, construction was brought to an almost complete standstill. The West Bank and Gaza Atlas indicated that while the "Jordanians amended some Mandatory outline city plans and prepared plans for the newly-created municipalities," they made "no changes in the regional planning schemes."
