ABSTRACT

Activity patterns, "business culture," "university culture" and institution formation are centers of attention. This chapter discusses methodological constraints, gives a description of the methods employed in the research for the book and reflects on the typology of the cases. As a preface to the case materials, it also gives a brief description of the legal systems of both Brazil and Mexico as they relate to intellectual property protection. In many developing countries there is little history of successful solicitation of information from business through questionnaires. The interview results are arranged into three arenas: those from technology source points, those relating to technology intermediation and those linking financial support with new technology. Interviews were conducted regarding five research parks in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Carlos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil and Cuernavaca, Mexico. Interviews in Mexico served to confirm the Brazilian findings.
