ABSTRACT

Israel has had close political ties to South Africa and the two states have cooperated extensively in the area of conventional arms. Iraq’s apparent revitalization of its nuclear weapons program will be of increasing concern to Israel in the years ahead. Tensions over Iraq’s nuclear ambitions and its growing non-nuclear potential, could replace Israeli-Syrian frictions as the most likely source of renewed hostilities between Israel and its Arab antagonists. If the documentary is correct, the data could have assisted Israel during the early 1980s, when it apparently developed weapons using US technologies, and possibly could have given Israel enough confidence in its weapon designs to obviate the need for full-scale nuclear tests. Libya, which has also acquired chemical weapons and is seeking a missile and air-strike capability sufficient to reach Israel, similarly poses a potentially serious threat to Israeli security.
