ABSTRACT

The most important medium for long distance communication was postal service, based on the Roman Cursus Publicus and operating at the speed of a ship or a horse. The normal turnaround time for communication between New York and London was one month, and the relative slowness of this communication had a direct impact on world events. The speed of communication began to change with technological discovery, and one invention followed another with accelerating speed. World communication expanded rapidly after World War II, and information technology revolutionized the way human beings and organizations exchange messages. Franklin D. Roosevelt's "fireside chats" were masterpieces of public communication. Further technological advances have made instantaneous, worldwide communication a reality, producing a communication order which is, for the first time, truly global.
