ABSTRACT

Volcanoes and undersea earthquakes disturb the water to the farthest drop on the other side of the world. The whole world has been altered immensely by the discoveries of science and the practical applications of technology. The western ocean breeze cooled the air of the Marshall Islands, although most of the palm trees had disappeared as victims of the war. The astronauts looked down on a canopy, a layer of smog enveloping the world, created by emissions from the smokestacks of all the factories on earth and from the exhaust of all the cars, buses, and trucks. The work done by scientists such as Max Planck, Wilhelm Roentgen, and Albert Einstein has led this century of men to believe the ultimate units of our world are not rocks, caves, bears, and the like, as man had thought before, but quanta, atoms, atomic nuclei, electrons, and electromagnetic radiation.
