The Impact of Nationality

In this chapter we turn our attention to one of the most obvious considerations students of political developments in Europe must take into account: nationality. Nationality influences all of the various Community activities although, in the view of some, commitment to one's nationality is a disease that integration cures. The basic theme of this chapter is something of a paraphrase of Mark Twain. To put it succinctly, the reports of nationalism's death have been exaggerated. Here, we do not attempt to exhaustively treat nationalism's vitality but simply survey it from the perspective of its analytical utility in discussing the future of integration as affected by the attitudes of the mass public.
