ABSTRACT

China has been a major world factor in fertilizer production, consumption, and international trade for more than five years, and its relative position is improving vis-a-vis other leading countries. Chemical fertilizers, along with water projects and insecticides, have been basic tools for advancing agriculture in China. Producing as much fertilizers and in as many varieties as possible has been a fundamental policy which has met with considerable success. Increasing interest has been shown in installing petrochemical and fertilizer facilities. In this regard, various new plants not hitherto considered might come into being, because of the rapid development of the oil industry. Meanwhile, China must continue to import large quantities of fertilizers from abroad, mainly from Japan. It happens that Sino-Japanese trade in fertilizers is very important in world transactions. China possesses sizeable and widespread deposits of uneven quality phosphate rock and apatite located mainly in the south but also in Shantung Province.
