ABSTRACT

Regional trade flows are indicative of a transnational economic community; the flow of messages is related to the need for communications among the societies. This chapter shows how the Nordic political leaders are facing intense transnational interactions in many sectors of society. The Nordic borders are penetrated by these activities even to the extent that the political control of each national unity is seriously weakened. The chapter analyzes both mail flows and the number of telephone calls exchanged as one can expect the telephone to be particularly important in this area of close language similarities. Data on migration across national boudaries are valuable indicators of a transnational labor community. The Nordic links clearly outweigh any external ties in the areas investigated, and suggest the existence of a Nordic transnational community. An important feature of Nordic business collaboration is the system of using partial contractors form the Nordic region in the production of major articles.
