ABSTRACT

Organization and cohesion are two factors which have a critical bearing on the overall fortunes and progress of insurgent movements. Accordingly, the Palestinian resistance will be carefully examined in terms of the structural dimensions of scope, cohesion, and complexity, as well as performance of instrumental and expressive functions. Although the Palestinian Liberation Organization had apparently been restored as the agency of coordinative power in the resistance, it remained to be seen whether this organizational reshuffling would be any more effective than previous ones. The empirical analysis of the fedayeen organization completed, three tasks remain: a summation of the underlying reasons for fedayeen disunity, an analysis of the relationships among the organizational variables and an analysis of the relationships among organizational variables and the other major factors. The explicit threats to the Jordanian government posed by left-wing groups, for instance, when combined with the organizational challenge to Jordanian authority in the camps, produced an untenable situation for Hussein.
