ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the students and scholars who want to learn about additional reference books relating to German studies will need to consult the standard guides to reference books. These guides contain thousands of additional titles of useful and interesting reference books on or relating to the language, literature, and civilization of the German-speaking world. The specialized guides listed provide exhaustive coverage of reference works useful to the student of German language and literature. The German publications of Heinz Ludwig Arnold and Johannes Hansel are classic guides that have assisted scholars of Germanistik. None of the guides to reference works listed deal exclusively with German civilization, but each one is very useful for locating additional reference works on or relating to some aspect of this interdisciplinary subject. These works provide excellent coverage of reference sources dealing with German history, philosophy, art, and music.
