ABSTRACT

Monolingual German dictionaries use the German language to define German words and phrases. For the student advanced enough to understand the definitions, monolingual German dictionaries reveal meanings in ways that no English equivalent can. For the English-speaking student of the German language, picture dictionaries are useful and effective tools for acquiring new vocabulary. Bibliographic tools that identify books and articles on the German language range from the highly specialized bibliographies for the seasoned scholar to the very general index, such as Humanities Index. Scholars have written many good German grammars, any of which would be useful to the intermediate and advanced student of German. None would be more useful to the English-speaking student, however, than the Reference Grammar of the German Language. Reference books that group together words with similar or opposite meanings are useful for students of any language. The works cited represent a small sampling of reference books on the regional speech and dialects of Central Europe.
