ABSTRACT

The main uses of tactical air power in combat have become observation of enemy positions and movements, and delivery of massed firepower against targets at locations ranging from the immediate battle area to great depths in the rear of the engaged combat forces. Air attacks against ground targets on and beyond the battlefield are complex operations requiring extensive communication, theaterwide coordination, and massive support. Such attacks must be explored in detail if the impact of the new weapon technologies is to be appreciated. Two approaches have concentrated on increasing the accuracy of weapon delivery by the aircraft or of the weapon itself. The first was made possible by the development of accurate navigation and bombing systems. The other new approach to accurate weapon delivery is weapon guidance. The use of radar for anti-aircraft gun direction was initiated in World War II, and it made a big difference.
