ABSTRACT

With the approach of the 1923 election, friends of Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan suggested that he be a candidate. In the period since receiving his B.A. degree in 1920, he had an interest in politics, resulting largely from the martial law experience. In December, 1919, he had been a spectator at the Congress and League sessions in Amritsar, In September, 1920, he was a member of the Punjab delegation to the Khilafat conference at Calcutta. During the campaign, Raja Sahib and his supporters found that Chaudhury Bahawal Bakhsh was using a strange technique to ensure that Jats would vote for him. Whenever he visited a Jat village he would take along a few dhupattas and would ask some young girls to wear these dhupattas. The real contest was between Chaudhry Bahawal Bakhsh and Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan. The Chaudhury had the advantage of his Jat biradari against the relations of the Raja.
