ABSTRACT

Lord Mountbatten was intolerant of delay in solving problems and accomplishing tasks. The British cabinet approved the Mountbatten plan with slight but unimportant amendments and informed him of its decision by cable. Therefore a series of telegrams were sent between Simla and London, The first was from Mountbatten asking that London consider the plan cancelled and that a new plan would be submitted shortly. Mountbatten received the written acceptance of the Congress. In its reply, the Congress remarked especially on the clause concerning a common governor general and said it would be pleased if Lord Mountbatten would stay on and give the country the benefit of his experience. On June 2, 1947, this historic conference of seven leaders with Lord Mountbatten took place in the Viceregal Palace in New Delhi. Lord Mountbatten also said that efforts would be made to speed up the transfer of power and suggested August 15, 1947, as a possible date.
