ABSTRACT

Looking at the very active political life of Mahatma Gandhi one could see many facets of his character. Gandhi and Suhrawardy decided that they would go and live in a locale inhabited by poor, helpless Muslims. They would call on neither the police nor the army for their own protection. The members of the delegation came out and told the crowd that Gandhi had assured them of the safety of the Hindus of Noakhali and the crowd should disperse. The Muslims of Calcutta immediately sent telegrams to the Muslim League leaders in Noakhali and received a promise from them that they would protect the Hindu minority. In the meantime, the premier of united Bengal, Suhrawardy, who had gone to Karachi, returned to Calcutta and met Gandhi. The Muslims - belonging to the working class - sat frightened in their houses. There were all sorts of people in the crowd of Hindus.
