ABSTRACT

Khwaja Nazimuddin was selected as governor general after Muhammad Ali Jinnah's death. But the actual responsibility for running the government and leading the nation was taken by Prime Minister Llaqat Ali Khan. Constitutionally he was already the leader of a parliamentary cabinet, but in the lifetime of Jinnah the cabinet was practically a presidential one in which Liaqat was the most senior minister and the person in whom Jinnah had the most confidence. Liaqat Ali Khan discharged his new duties with devotion, energy and self confidence. Liaqat paid particular attention to the defense of Pakistan and spent money liberally on equipment. In the provinces, right after Jinnah's death, Liaqat made special efforts to resolve the disputes among the provincial leaders and to create a sense of solidarity in their ranks. Liaqat tried to bring about a reconciliation between Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan and Pir Amin-ul-Hasnat of Manki Sharif.
