ABSTRACT

The office of prime minister of Pakistan had suddenly fallen vacant and, with consultation and consent from those members of the cabinet present in Karachi, Governor General Nazimuddin himself took the office. It was recommended to the Grown that the then finance minister, Malik Ghulam Muhammad, be appointed governor general. Muhammad Ali of Bogra was called back urgently from his position as ambassador to the United States, rushed direct from the airport to the residence of the governor general and sworn in as the third prime minister of Pakistan. Governor General Ghulam Muhammad feared that the Frontier chief minister, Khan Abdul Qayyum Khan, might side with the ousted prime minister and that there might be some opposition in the Frontier to the new arrangements. Malik Ghulam Muhammad was a Khakazai Pathan whose family was from Jullundur District although he was born in Lahore.
