ABSTRACT

New elections for the Legisltaive Assembly in East Bengal were held later than those in other provinces, in March, 1954. They brought in their wake a chain of bloody incidents which led to the suspension of the new assembly and the ministry immediately after their installation, the province remained under governor's rule for about a year. Fatima Jinnah also felt that the defeat of the Muslim League would be dangerous for the country and she went to East Pakistan to provide moral support for the party. The 1954 East Bengal elections are covered in all the standard works on Pakistan. The most ill-informed and, indeed, vulgar, argument was put forward by Mujibur Rahman. He took the line that the riots were instigated by the owners of the factories themselves with the intention to cause the workers to fight among themselves and thus weaken the unions of which the owners were afraid.
